Journey with a Developmental Editor – #2

Have you ever had insomnia? I don’t get it often, but when I do, it strikes hard. I had it last night. I’d gone to sleep, the dogs heard some noise from outside, barked and woke me up. It was midnight and I couldn’t go back to sleep. Counting sheep wasn’t going to help, I was wide awake.

The first thing I did was reach for my phone. I don’t sleep with Siri, but she’s next to me on my bedside table while I sleep. I figured I’d play a few games of Words With Firends, check Facebook and Twitter and my email. To my surprise I had an email from my editor, Alida.

The email was the proposal from our first meeting along with some initial feedback. The proposal pretty much matched what we discussed at the initial meeting. I’m signing up with Alida for developmental coaching and developmental editing.

There was also some initial feedback on the scenes and the outline/beat sheet I sent her after our first meeting.  Most of the feedback I internally had assessed already and agreed with, there were some new points. The biggest surprise was her discussion on Point of View and will be one of the major things we discuss at our first “official” meeting.

I think we’re off to a great start. The way I’m internalizing/visualizing this is that Alida is my personal trainer and six months or so from now,I’m going to be in better writing shape, my story will be in shape and I’ll have received the training and tips I need to keep writing and apply what I’ve learned to my future projects.
