After struggling with the decision on whether or not I should pull my books from other platforms, I decided to take the leap and enroll in KDP Select and I offered my book for free for two days Jan 11th & 12th. 

I've been tracking my sales on a regular basis. Immediately after coming off of free, my sales were about 50 times what they were before being free.  Every day or two my sales dropped another factor; to 40 times, 30, 25... I've leveled off at about 10 times my pre-free sales. 

I haven't been hit by kindle lightning yet nor have I found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, but the KDP Select experience was definitely worth enrolling in and has increased my exposure and sales.

Next, I need to determine when I'll use my other 3 days.

My results have been the same as yours. I'm very pro Kindle Select!! I've had great results and I only have one novel and one short story!

I've enrolled several of my books, and whilst I haven't experienced such a massive increase as yourself, I found my total sales increased quite reasonably.

I suppose it's down to the 'also bought' exposure from Amazon and to increased exposure of my name from free downloads. Whatever, I'm glad I took the tentative step,

This is all just one big experiment for all of us. I'm not advocating for or against enrolling, but based on my sales, I decided to enroll and have been happy with it. Now the question is, is the change in sales level something that will continue for this book long or short term.

Indeed, Doug, the question we are all fielding is whether or not sales will level after naturally falling some, and then gradually increase, or just return to the mean with no long term impact. I too have seen a marked jump in all my sales, which has tapered off, leaving me at roughly double my pre-freebie overall volume. Interestingly, my pet book, An Angel With Fur, saw a huge increase, and then trickled back to about three times normal sales. The Geronimo Breach is quadruple pre-free levels, and looks like it's stabilized for now, even like you, after increasing the price. The others are maybe up 50%. So on balance, the experiment was good from a visibility standpoint, but I suspect there are no gimmicks. In the end it will be all about the writing.

I'm planning to hold off for a while before using any more free days on my novels, as I think it has a deleterious effect to space them too proximately. I have a friend who found that out the hard way. My but says 10 weeks, minimum, between free promotions. That's only a hunch, but it feels right.

What happens after someone like an Apple makes a big push will be anyone's guess, though, so I'm a little cautious about signing up for another round and getting caught on a single platform. But we'll see.

Thanks for this series of posts, Doug. I read with great interest. My current novel PETROPLAGUE is only semi-indie (digital publisher Diversion Books owns the rights) so I can't experiment with free right now, but I may be putting up a true self-pub ebook later this spring and will consider this option.

I wish I had a crystal ball. Things change so fast, what was KDP Select will become something else in the future. I'm feeling that I have to try what comes along and see what I can learn from it.

Especially, if it's something Amazon is doing since they're the 900 pound gorilla in the reading room right now.
