The Federal Reserve has never been robbed.

FBI Special Agent Jack Miller, pulled into a high-profile case to mentor a new agent, finds himself in a clash with the toughest opponent of his career. The chase culminates in the bowels of the city, in the storm sewers and tunnels beneath The Ninth District Federal Reserve of Minneapolis.

"Suspense, intrigue, mystery... Can't wait to make that transition from the last page of Ninth District into the first pages of the sequel." -- Shawn Hopkins, author of Progeny

"In his debut novel, The Ninth District, author Dorow has crafted a thriller that's so edge-of-seat, can't-put-it-down satisfying that I regret he didn't take up his pen 20 years ago." -- Glenn Gordon, author of Brother's Keeper

"A great book and writing accomplishment." -- J.A. Greenleaf, author of Sudden Light

Where did the ideas for The Ninth District come from?

Some of the common questions I've been asked by the people who have read my book are, where did I get the ideas or how much research did I do to have inputs into writing the details in the story?

I find these questions kind of funny, because I am a fiction writer. Most of the ideas and details came from my imagination, but there are a few key items I can point to that came into play as I made up the story. I'm going to share the journey of writing of The Ninth District here.

A long, long, time ago I decided to try and write a book. I've always been a big reader, mysteries, horror, thrillers and suspense. I took a couple of classes at The Loft Literary Center,  here in Minneapolis. One, on beginning fiction writing and the other, on genre fiction writing. I decided to try and write a thriller because that's what I mostly read and felt I had the best feel for the structure, flow and beats of the story.

I started writing. I wrote a lot of scenes that were practice. Early on I focused in on the main protagonist being an FBI agent in Minneapolis who solved bank robberies. He had a couple of kids, like me.  I decided to write in third person because that is what I prefer to read.  I spoke with a friend of mine, who is an FBI agent, to get a feel for how agents interacted with each other and I'd toured his office when he was working out of Indianapolis a while back.

Early on, I read an article in City Pages, a local weekly paper, about urban explorers in Minneapolis who explored the sewers and tunnels under the city. One paragraph talked about how the explorers didn't want to explore come tunnels and caves under Nicollet Island since it across the river from the Federal Reserve and it was shortly after the Sept 11th terrorist attack and everyone was on high alert.

From there, I did some research on the internet about the Federal Reserve and learned that it's never been robbed.

Those are the pieces:
  1. FBI agent solving bank robberies
  2. Urban explorer story and a sentence about the Federal Reserve being on alert after 9/11
  3. An internet search that turned up that the Federal Reserve has never been robbed.
The rest is from my imagination, that's why I enjoy writing. I get to do some research, learn some things and put the pieces together to tell a story.

Now that you've seen behind the curtain, you'll have to wait until I publish the second book to learn what prompted the inputs into that story.

People have a hard time spelling my last name; adding 2 R's, or an A or a U.

And they're never sure how to pronounce it.

Dorow rhymes with Zorro
